Monkaburi is the term used to describe trees with a branch leaning out over a pathway or gateway and this is also referred to as a welcome branch. These are common to see in Japan over doorways and entrances and this is something that can be built into your bonsai design on Pines in particular. Here are a selection of ones seen in Japan to hopefully inspire you with your bonsai designs.
Lit. gate crowning. A tree planted by a garden gate so that its branches extend over the gate. In some cases the branches are trained to grow parallel with the top of the gate. In the Kantou 関東 area the red pine (akamatsu 赤松) is used, while the black pine (kuromatsu 黒松) is common in the Kansai 関西 region. The gate crowning pine is meant to give a sense of volume to the small entry gardens (tsuboniwa 坪庭) as well as to provide a visual contrast between the rough, green and three-dimensional pine and the smooth, brown and two-dimensional gate.
