To see such an amazing collection of trees on display from the Wessex Society at the Heathrow Show was fabulous enough, but amazing to know that trees on display were created, styled and owned by Manuel Gonzalez of the Wessex Bonsai Society which left me in even more amazement. He sadly passed away in October this year, it was a great testiment to his awesome creativity, energy and enthusiasm for the art of bonsai and no one could have showed more passion and love for his trees as well as everyone else’s trees.

He had a tremendous eye for detail and could find a design and style for nearly all trees and would always offer help and advice with a huge grin, smile and warmth that will be truly missed. He had a natural flamboyant style but first and foremost cared about the health of the trees and dedicated his time to bringing out the best in his trees which is easy to see with just a small selection of his collection on display.

Below is a gallery of his trees, displayed at the Show and his Japanese Pine was one of the public’s favourite, as well as his Yew which received the FOBBS merit award. If there was ever one man who could lend his hand to any species, it was Manuel. He amazed us with his breath & depth of knowledge on individual species too, like Yew or Scots Pine where he seemingly worked wonders. He will be missed.
