Buxus sinica

Buxus sinica (Chinese Box) makes an impressive bonsai especially on the size and scale of the examples on display at the recent Bonsai Clubs International (BCI) Convention in Guangzhou, China. There were some stunning mature exhibits of the Chinese box and the trunk fluting and ridges presented a very dominant trunk image as well as the dense evergreen canopy.

During the Bonsai Clubs International Convention in Guangzhou in China, on one of the field trip days we were fortunate to visit the and meet the Chairman and CEO and Founder, Mr Chen Chang. In addition to have a superb collection of bonsai trees at the Panyu Chu Kong Steel Pipe Co. Ltd. Bonsai Garden there is also a large bonsai tree growing nursery which plus around 3,000 hectares of breeding farm of brocaded Carp.

One of the most amazing places to be priviledged to visit whilst in China on the BCI convention was the Bonsai Garden at Panyu Chu Kong Steel Pipe Co Ltd. The scale of the garden is vast but it needs to be for the scale of bonsai on display to enable them to be set off their advantage. There are over 4,000 pots of bonsai set within 3,000 hectares and here are some of the trees that we saw.

Autumn is an amazing time of year as the colourful display of the leaves on the trees can be stunning. This process is complex but in short leaves contain Chlorophyll hence appear green, and when this is no longer produced the leaves change colour. The key triggers are light levels, weather and chemical reactions.

Blachia siamensis

The Blachia siamensis is a species of bonsai tree that was new to me and seen for the first time at the Bonsai Clubs International Exhibition in Guangzhou, China. It was an unusual tree species with some great key features and there were many examples on display to observe and study.

This was a first to see bonsai in China at an amazing 5 day convention hosted and organised by Bonsai Clubs International and Asia-Pacific Bonsai and Viewing Stones convention and it was held in September in Guangzhou. The scale of the convention and the bonsai trees on display was the most impressive, the styles were stunning and some very unique and unusual to styles were are used to seeing in the UK.
