Hopefully all your bonsai trees are now being protected for the winter and here is a quick generic guide to bonsai in November as the colder weather has now arrived in the UK.
Here are a few more images from the Pine Garden ‘Pinsongqiu’ in China but focusing on the Figs that formed part of the stunning collection of Bonsai trees on display. The brick work pots were incredible and fascinating and a great way to showcase the roots of the figs to their advantage.
This weekend was the Saturday workshop with Lee Verhorevoort from Lee Verhorevoort Bonsai and this was an ideal opportunity for all club members to get professional advice from Lee and get pruning and style tips and guidance on your own bonsai trees. Lee spent the entire day working around the room on everyone’s bonsai trees. He spent time discussing pruning techniques for the specific species as well as aided with re-styling trees and positioning of wired branches.
Bombax ceiba, 木棉 mu mian are trees that reach around 25 m in height. They are tall with buttressed trunks and usually very spiny on young trees. The bark is tray-white and the branches are spreading. The leaves are large and oblong but narrow. The flowers appear in March and April and are solitary, petals usually red, sometimes orange-red. Seeds are produced in a good quantity in the summer. The tree grows in hot dry river valleys and savanna and can be found in Guangdong and the local area. The Bougainvillea bonsai on display at the Bonsai Clubs International Convention exhibition where out of this world and something else. They have a very distinct presence with some amazing branch work creating a very unique style and appearance.
Pinsongqiu is located in Daliang County, Shunde in China. It is an amazing garden comprised of predominately Pines hence the name. The main species of Pine is Pinus massoniana and there are over 150 distinctive masterpieces of pine bonsai all created in the Lingna style.
Buxus sinica (Chinese Box) makes an impressive bonsai especially on the size and scale of the examples on display at the recent Bonsai Clubs International (BCI) Convention in Guangzhou, China. There were some stunning mature exhibits of the Chinese box and the trunk fluting and ridges presented a very dominant trunk image as well as the dense evergreen canopy.
During the Bonsai Clubs International Convention in Guangzhou in China, on one of the field trip days we were fortunate to visit the and meet the Chairman and CEO and Founder, Mr Chen Chang. In addition to have a superb collection of bonsai trees at the Panyu Chu Kong Steel Pipe Co. Ltd. Bonsai Garden there is also a large bonsai tree growing nursery which plus around 3,000 hectares of breeding farm of brocaded Carp.
